St. John’s Ministries provides homeless shelter services in the summer, meeting basic needs

St. John’s Ministries created a program, Summer Safe Sleep, six years ago to shelter those most vulnerable in the offseason months. Last summer the parameters were refined for Summer Safe Sleep to shelter those who are chronically homeless, or with severe mental health or physical conditions that make them high-risk if on the street.
St. John’s Ministries will identify certain individuals who are the most vulnerable; those with the most significant barriers to moving forward. The set list of guests will be determined prior to the start of the summer season. Those on the list can utilize Summer Safe Sleep from May 1 to October 31. The predetermined list will not be added to throughout summer.
If an individual not on the predetermined list is referred to or presents at St. John’s Ministries seeking shelter during the summer months (May 1 – October 31), they will be referred to a case manager at the Micah Center or Wellspring who will determine eligibility. If a case manager deems the individual’s circumstance necessary for shelter, it will be on a temporary period. Call 920-436-9344 for assistance.
St. John’s Ministries has traditionally offered a drop-in day on Tuesdays (8:30 am to 1:30 pm) during the summer, providing basic needs to those experiencing homelessness. This summer it will staff an additional drop-in day on Fridays (8:30 am to 12:00 pm). Adults seeking breakfast or lunch, showers, case management, or basic needs are encouraged to attend a drop-in day at St. John’s Ministries Men’s Shelter (411 St. John St.).
This summer, St. John’s Ministries staff will also perform increased street outreach to connect with those experiencing homelessness. In doing so, a truer picture of how many homeless individuals are on the streets will provide accurate data. Further, the street outreach goal is to connect individuals with additional St. John’s Ministries services, like drop-in days.
