GREEN BAY, Wis. — St. John’s Homeless Shelter has hired Steve Schauer as its new Director of Community Engagement to oversee communications, grant writing and community engagement. He will also assist in fundraising efforts.
“I want to thank Alexia Wood and the St. John’s staff for giving me the opportunity to tell the stories of those affected by homelessness in the greater Green Bay area,” Schauer said. “Homelessness affects a lot of people and some of those people could be your neighbor or friend and you had no idea. St. John’s mission to give every person dignity and a sense of self-worth are important to making our community better. I look forward to the challenge of breaking the stigma around homelessness in our community and beyond.”
Schauer, a native of the greater Green Bay area, has been working in communications and community engagement for the past decade-plus. He most recently came to St. John’s from the Dairy Business Association where he worked with farmer-led watershed conservation groups who were implementing conservation and sustainability efforts. Schauer was the communications point of contact for six groups across the state working with the media, writing press releases and publishing for their websites and social media platforms.
Prior to working in dairy, he was the Director of Athletic Communications at his alma mater in Mequon, Wis., Concordia University Wisconsin, for nine years. While at CUW he led the communications efforts for the athletic department that had 35 sports, 700+ student-athletes and over 50 coaches and staff. Schauer made significant changes, including three redesigns of CUWFalcons.com, implementing live multi-camera video broadcasts with broadcasters, live statistics for every home game, creating numerous social media accounts and leading strong graphic design and video production initiatives.
