On Wednesday, March 18, St. John’s expanded shelter services to meet the need during the COVID-19 crisis, providing 24/7 shelter at both St. John’s Homeless Shelter as well as a second site at Spring Lake Church Downtown.
By doing this, our meal needs more than doubled overnight.
We decided that in order to provide meals at this second shelter location, we’d partner to support our locally owned restaurants…many that had been forced to cut back services or close altogether in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
Among the first to reach out to us was Pablo’s Mexican Grill & Cantina. Then The Golden Basket and many more followed. Community members also reached out wanting to donate money to cover meals purchased from local restaurants. In the matter of days, we had our first week of lunches and dinners at Spring Lake Church nearly covered. And one guest exclaimed, “Best meal ever!” after each one, showing how much the partnerships meant to those in need during this crisis. Even in a difficult time, compounded by the stresses of experiencing homelessness, our guests and staff are finding joy in the food we share together and the generosity of our Green Bay community.
